Teaching

Though education is not the primary aim of the 3TU.Centre for Ethics and Technology (3TU.Ethics), it is an interesting field where the results of research can be transferred to the public domain (i.e. public institutions, industry, institutions of higher education). Here are some examples of the involvement of our members in education (see also the items in the menu left):

Ethics courses for engineering students at bachelor and master level

Many of our members teach ethics to engineering students at the bachelor or master level at one of the three universities of technology involved in 3TU.EThics. To get an impression of the scope of these courses, see the personal pages of our members.

Ethics modules for PhD students in engineering

In May 2008 3TU.Ethics has received a grant for developing a number of modules to teach ethics to PhD students in the field of engineering. The grant is provided by NWO (the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research) and Technology Foundation STW. More information on these modules will soon be made available.

Educational software program Agora

A recent succsful educational story is Agora, a software environment for case analysis in the domain of ethics and technology. This tool facilitates teaching to large groups of students and also enables interuniversity course development. Other institutions both in the Netherlands and abroad have expressed interest in working with Agora. For example, a Japanese version of the program has already been made. For more information, see the Agora website.

Introductory textbook

3TU.Ethics members from Delft and Eindhoven have jointly written a highly successful introductory textbook in Ethics of Technology and Engineering, titled ”Ethiek en Techniek; Morele overwegingen in de ingenieurspraktijk”. It is in use in many Dutch colleges and will be translated into English.
