Smids, Jilles

Research profile

Jilles Smids is a PhD candidate in the ethics of persuasive technology at the section of Philosophy and Ethics. He studied chemistry at Utrecht University and taught chemistry (and some philosophy classes) at a secondary school level for seven and a half years. Meanwhile he studied philosophy at Utrecht University. In his Bachelor’s he focused on epistemology and philosophy of science. Now he is finishing his Master’s, in which he moved to meta-ethics, with a particular interest in moral psychology.

Currently, he works on the NWO project “Persuasive Technology, Allocation of Control, and Social Values”. Within this interdisciplinary project, comprising the fields of mechanical engineering, psychology and philosophy, he addresses the moral issues that arise when persuasive technology is used.
