Kinderlerer, J. (Julian)

Research profile

Kinderlerer is professor in Biotechnology and Society in the Faculty of Applied Sciences at the Delft University of Technology and is co-appointed in its Faculty of Technology, Policy and Management. Prof. Kinderlerer is a biochemist who has moved from research interests in theoretical aspects of enzymology and enzyme kinetics to looking at law, ethics, risk assessment and risk analysis in biotechnology. He has contributed to the drafting of legislation or guidelines for the safe use relation to genetically modified organisms. He was part of the team that produced a major report on public perception of biotechnology for the British Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food of the products of biotechnology in many countries throughout the world on their draft law in 1998, and has also been working on a number of major projects with the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO). Prof Kinderlerer has also acted as the convenor of a working group on issues relating to developing countries for an EU project looking at “Bioethical aspects of Biotechnology in Agriculture and Food”. He is a member of the Commission on Environmental Law (CEL) of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and during 2001 and 2002 has collaborated as one of the authors of the official guide to the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety which is being produced by the IUCN Law Centre. During May 1999 he was the rapporteur at the session on Developing Countries at the International Conference organised by the Council of Europe to examine these ethical issues arising from the application of biotechnology. Professor Kinderlerer has developed an association with many organisations and universities throughout the world.
