Oost, E.C.J. van (Ellen)
Research profile
Ellen van Oost is associate professor in the field of gender and technology at the University of Twente). She has a degree in mathematical engineering (MSc.) and wrote a sociological-historical thesis on gender processes in the societal embedding of early computers. She is a member of the Netherlands Graduate School of Science, Technology and Modern Culture and participates in the Centre for Telematics and Information Technology (CTIT) of the University of Twente. Currently she is coordinator of the Science, Technology and Society track in the master Philosophy of Science, Technology and Society.
Her present research is focussed on contemporary and future influences of ICT on society, with a special emphasis on gender relations. In her research she combines theoretical perspectives of script analysis and domestication analysis to gain inshigt into processes that shape both digital products as well as its (gendered) users. One of her latest projects concerned the development – in cooperation with TNO-STB - of a guide for policy makers and designers for developing web applications that explicitly aim to digitally and socially activate residents (especailly minority groups).
