Shelley-Egan, C. (Clare)
Research profile
Clare Shelley-Egan obtained a BSc. Microbiology from University College Cork and an MSc. Science Communication from Dublin City University. She has just completed an MSc. by Research in Science & Technology Studies at the University of Edinburgh. Her MSc. thesis was titled ‘The mobilization of expectations in the building of networks and construction of programmes in nanotechnology’. Clare has recently joined STeHPS as a researcher on the European Commission – funded project DEEPEN (Deepening Ethical Engagement and Participation in Emerging Nanotechnologies). Based on this project, she will work towards a PhD thesis, supervised by Prof. dr. A. Rip.
The DEEPEN project aims to establish an integrated understanding of the ethical issues posed by emerging nanotechnologies, develop methodological tools for engaging civil society and the nanoscience community in ethical reflection, and develop recommendations for incorporating ethical understanding into research practices and governance structures. Clare’s research will involve reconstructing and mapping de-facto ethics in the nano-world and designing novel collaborations with nano-enactors in order to foster greater ethical reflexivity.
