Roeser, S. (Sabine)

Research profile

Sabine Roeser is managing director of the 3TU.Centre for Ethics and Technology. Roeser is an associate professor at Delft University of Technology, where she has been working since September 2001. Her main research interests are in risk and emotion and in ethical intuitionism. She is currently working on articles on risk and emotion, a monograph on moral emotions and intuitions and she has edited several volumes for international publishers. Roeser is editor in chief for Springer’s Handbook on Risk Theory. She frequently organize conferences with leading scholars. Together with Maureen Sie, Sabine Roeser is the coordinator of the Dutch research group on metaethics and methodology. Roeser regularly gets interviewed for popular media, and she is a member of the ‘Filosofisch Elftal’ (Philosophers’ team) of the Dutch newspaper Trouw. Roeser is a member of the COGEM, a committee that advises the Dutch government about genetic modification.

Education:

Sabine Roeser obtained her PhD in 2002 at the Free University, Amsterdam, for her thesis Ethical Intuitions and Emotions: A Philosophical Study. During her PhD-research, she spent two terms abroad: in the Fall term 2000 she studied at the University of Reading with Jonathan Dancy, in the Spring term 1999 she studied at the University of Notre Dame. Sabine holds an M.A.-degree in Philosophy (cum laude, 1997) and an M.A.-degree in Political Science (1998), both from the University of Amsterdam. She did her B.A. in painting at the Academy of Fine Arts, Maastricht (1994).

Research:

From September 2009-June 2010 Sabine Roeser is a NIAS-fellow, working on a project on how to include emotions in the design process of risky technologies. From April 2005 through July 2009 Roeser has worked on the research project: Emotions and Technological Risks: Emotions as a Normative Guide in Judging the Moral Acceptability of Technological Risks, for which she obtained a prestigious VENI-grant (nr. 275-20-007) from the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (NWO). Roeser has recently been awarded a follow-up grant, a so-called NWO-VIDI-grant, for excellent researchers, worth 800.000 Euros. This grant will allow her to create her own research group on Moral Emotions and Risk Politics. Roeser will lead and work on this project from July 2010-June 2015.
