Christian F. R. Illies (1963) is professor of culture and technology at the Technical University Delft (KIVI-NIRIA-Leerstoel) and assistant professor of philosophy and ethics at Eindhoven University of Technology.
After his studies of biology, philosophy and history of art in Heidelberg and Konstanz (Master of Science, specialisation in Neurophysiology, Konstanz 1989), Christian Illies continued his studies of philosophy in Paris (Ecole Normale Supèrieure Fontenay/St. Cloud) and in Oxford as a Rhodes Scholar (DPhil, Oxford University 1995). The topic of his dissertation was Kant’s ethical philosophy; in this work he attempts to bring together analytical and continental approaches to Kant. From 1995 to 2002, he has worked as a Hochschulassistent at Essen University; in 1999 he was a visiting Professor at the University of Notre Dame (Indiana) and in 2001 at the European College of Liberal Arts in Berlin. In 2002, he completed his Habilitation (advanced second doctorate) at the Technical University of Aachen with a thesis on foundational issues in ethics, in particular on the use of transcendental arguments in practical philosophy. In 2006, he got appointed to the KIVI-NIRIA Leerstoel in Delft.
Christian Illies’ academic teaching and research have dwelt upon moral philosophy (esp. modern ethical theories and meta-ethics, but also applied ethics, esp. in the areas of bioethics), and philosophy of technology, science and biology (esp. theory of evolution, its scientific structure and relevance to anthropology and to moral philosophy). A further research interest is philosophy of the built environment.
