Doorn, N. (Neelke)

Research profile

Neelke Doorn is assistant professor Ethics of Water Governance at the Department of Philosophy of Delft University of Technology. She recently finished her work on the project Moral Responsibility in R&D networks. This research resulted in a PhD thesis, which she defended in May, 2011. Neelke has a master degree in Civil Engineering (Delft 1997, MSc) and Philosophy (Leiden 2005, MA). Her current research concentrates on moral and distributive issues in the governance of water. In addition, she is involved in the NanoNextNL project, in which she studies the governance and regulation of nanotechnology.

Neelke has ten years working experience as a research engineer in the field of coastal engineering. Between 2006 and 2010, she was also affiliated to the Radboud University in Nijmegen, where she held a part-time research position at the Centre of Ethics focusing on justice issues in post-conflict situations. Neelke spent the spring 2010 term as visiting researcher at the Philosophy Department of the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) in Stockholm, Sweden, where she did research on the philosophy of risks. In 2011, Neelke was awarded a grant to spend two months at the Brocher Foundation near Geneva, Suisse, where she wrote a paper on the role of applied ethicists in the development of health care technologies.

Neelke was co-organizer of the international conference on moral responsibility that was held at TU Delft (August 24-27, 2009). On October 22-23, 2010, she organized an international workshop on “Ethics in the laboratory. Encouraging reflection through interdisciplinary collaboration” (together with Daan Schuurbiers and Ibo van de Poel). Neelke was co-organizer of the international conference on Responsible Innovation. In 2012, Neelke will organize a number of activities related to the ethics of water governance, which you can find at her water website.
