Research profile
Since September 2009 Ilse is a PhD candidate within the multidisciplinary research project Technology & Human Development - A Capability Approach (project’s public progres report Jan, 2012). The project is funded by NWO (The Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research) and Ilse was initiator of and co-applicant for the grant application.
Her publications address different audiences, having appeared a.o. in the journals Design Issues, the Journal of Human Development and Capabilities and in Ethical Theory and Moral Practice. Together with Jeroen van den Hoven she edited the volume The Capability Approach, Technology and Design, which is forthcoming with Springer in spring 2012.
Ilse is the main organizer of the 2011 conference of the Human Development & Capability Association (HDCA), which took place from September 6-8th in The Hague (theme: ‘innovation, development & human capabilities’). She is also one of the initiators & coordinators of the HDCA thematic group ‘Technology & Design’.

Educational background
Ilse Oosterlaken studied ‘Technology & Society’ at Eindhoven University of Technology (combined B.Sc./M.Sc. degree). Her areas of specialization within this program were (1) architecture & construction management and (2) technology & development studies. During her studies, she gained international experience in Tanzania, South Africa and Thailand. She graduated in 2001. She also has a B.A. in philosophy (plus minor in journalism) from the University of Utrecht, where she was a part-time student from September 2003 until August 2007.
Previous work experience
From November 2006 to August 2009 Ilse was coordinator / policy officer of 3TU.Ethics, working closely with and supporting its managing director and scientific director. In the period 2001-2007 Ilse has a.o. worked for Eindhoven University of Technology as lecturer and researcher construction management & engineering, for HBO University Netherlands as a lecturer in real estate management and for EIRENE Nederland (a small Dutch peace and development organisation) as coordinator / policy & communication officer.
