Oosterlaken, E.T. (Ilse)

Research profile

Since September 2009 Ilse is a PhD candidate within 3TU.Ethics, working on the relevance and implications of the capability approach of Nussbaum and Sen for the domain of technology, engineering and design, with a special focus on the context of development and global justice.

She is the main organizer of the 2011 conference of the Human Development & Capability Association (HDCA), which took place from September 6-8th in The Hague (theme: ‘innovation, development & human capabilities’). She is also initiator & coordinator of the HDCA thematic group ‘Technology & Design’.

Educational background

Ilse Oosterlaken studied ‘Technology & Society’ at the Faculty of Technology Management, Eindhoven University of Technology (BSc/MSc). Her areas of specialization within this program were (1) architecture & construction management and (2) technology & development studies. During her studies, she gained international experience in Tanzania, South Africa and Thailand. She graduated in 2001. She has a bachelor degree in philosophy (plus minor in journalism) from the University of Utrecht, where she was a part-time student from September 2003 until August 2007. 

Previous work experience

From November 2006 to August 2009 Ilse was coordinator of 3TU.Ethics, working closely with and supporting its managing director and scientific director. In the period 2001-2007 Ilse has a.o. worked for Eindhoven University of Technology as lecturer and researcher construction management & engineering, for HBO University Netherlands as a lecturer in real estate management and for EIRENE Nederland (a small Dutch peace and development organisation) as coordinator / policy & communication officer.
