On Thursday March, 26 Marya Schechtman will present a paper on “Persons, Selves, and Stories; Complexities of the Narrative Approach to Personal Identity”. This paper considers objections to narrative views raised by Galen Strawson in Against Narrativity.

Conference: Ethics, Technology and Identity

June 18-20 of 2008, TU Delft

Information technology plays an increasingly important role in society and in human lives. Identity Management Technologies (e.g. biometrics, profiling, surveillance), in combination with a variety of identification procedures and personalized services are ubiquitous and pervasive. This calls for careful consideration and design of collecting, mining, storing and use of personal information. This conference aims to discuss the theme of ‘identity’ in light of new (information) technology. Key-note speakers are David Velleman, Oscar Gandy, Robin Dillon and David Shoemaker.

Workshop: The Good Life in a Technological Age

International Workshop, June 12-14 of 2008

This workshop will consider the implications of contemporary technology for the quality of life, and will examine approaches from philosophy and social and behavioural science for studying the quality of life in a technological age. Since the industrial revolution, modern technology has seriously impacted day-to-day life and has engendered changing ideals of the good life. In recent years, new technologies in the information, medical, industrial, and other sectors have further impacted everyday life. In this workshop, different disciplinary perspectives, from philosophy, psychology, economics and other fields, will be employed to interpret and evaluate contemporary relations between technology and the quality of life.

Workshop: International Perspectives on Interdisciplinarity in Philosophy of Science & Engineering

The Department of Philosophy at University of Twente (one of the partners in 3TU.Ethics) is proud to invite you to our international workshop on May 23 2008. The aim of the workshop is to explore methods for performing interdisciplinary research and for exchanging experiences. The workshop will take place at Hotel Drienerburght on University of Twente campus and will feature speakers from University of North Texas, Colorado School of Mines, Twente University and the Rathenau Institute.

The fourth PSTS Academic Workshop

A cordial invitation to a one-day workshop on research in philosophy of technology and STS as it is currently carried out at the institutes participating in the international Philosophy of Science, Technology and Society (PSTS) MSc program. The workshop will consist of six presentations of academic research, with commentaries prepared by the students from the PSTS MSc program, and general discussions.

Expert meeting ‘technology, security & ethics’

It is also the fast development of new technologies that raises such questions, as explorative discussion for the new NWO program on responsible innovation have made clear. The 3TU.Centre for Ethics and Technology is proud to have found three distinguished and internationally recognized scholars willing to share their knowledge and discuss urgent and important topics in the area of technology, security and ethics with Dutch experts, policy advisors and other people working in this area.

On Tuesday March, 25 Mariassunta Piccinni of the Centre for Environmental Law Decisions and Corporate Ethical Certification of the University of Padua (Italy) will present a paper on “Neurotechnologies, personal identity and health in the patient-physician relationship: a private law perspective”. The talk is part of the cooperation on nano-ethics between the Centre for Environmental Law Decisions and Corporate Ethical Certification of the University of Padua and the 3TU.Centre for Ethics and Technology. Mariassunta Piccinni will visit Delft from March, 24 until March, 28.
