Workshop: Ethics of Architecture & Urban Planning
A workshop with special focus on teaching ethics to architecture students
On March 7th, 2008 the 3TU.Centre for Ethics and Technology, the Delft Platform for Ethics and Technology and the Faculty of Architecture (TU Delft) are together organizing a workshop on the ethics of architecture and urban planning. Special focus will be on teaching ethics to architecture students. Speakers include Warwock Fox, Nicholas Ray and Tom Spector. The workshop will end with a panel discussion, co-organized with Stylos, the association of architecture students.

Information on speakers
- Warwick Fox is Reader in Ethics at the Centre for Professional Ethics, University of Central Lancashire. His books include Toward a Transpersonal Ecology: Developing New Foundations for Environmentalism (State University of New York Press, 1995, and Green Books, UK, 1995), Ethics and the Built Environment (ed., Routledge, 2000), and A Theory of General Ethics: Human Relationships, Nature, and the Built Environment (The MIT Press, 2006).
- Nicholas Ray, architect and lecturer, received a Diploma in Architecture at University College, London, and an M.A. at the University of Cambridge. Principal since 1989 of Nicholas Ray Associates, in Cambridge, UK, he was formerly partner at Hughes and Bicknell Architects, Cambridge. Ray has practiced in Cambridge since 1973, where he has been particularly concerned with new buildings in conservation areas, and the adaptation of historic buildings. His most prominent building in Cambridge is Quayside, on the banks of the Cam opposite Magdalene College. In 1993 he became the founding director of the Cambridge Historic Buildings Group. He is a Senior Lecturer and studio master in the Department of Architecture, University of Cambridge and is a Fellow of Jesus College. Ray is the author of numerous articles in professional journals, of Cambridge Architecture - a Concise Guide (Cambridge and New York: Cambridge University Press, 1994), of Alvar Aalto (New Haven and London: Yale University Press 2005) and editor of Architectur and its Ethical Dilemmas (London and New York: Taylor and Francis, 2006).
- Tom Spector: Ph.D in architecture, University of California at Berkeley, 2000. MArch, Georgia Tech, 1982. B.S. in business administration, Florida State University, 1977. Professor Spector has been a registered architect since 1985. He currently hold an NCARB certificate, as well as registrations in both Georgia and California. Areas of Interest: The focus of Professor Spector’s doctoral work and of current scholarship is in developing topics in architectural design ethics. Other interests include the theory and practice of perspective drawing, and architecture design theory, especially as it relates to professional practice issues, and moral philosophy.

Participation in the workshop is on invitation only. The workshop is organized by prof. Christian Illies on the occasion of his farewell to Delft University of Technology and the 3TU.Centre for Ethics and Technology.
