Dr Tsjalling Swierstra appointed as Professor at UvA

Dr Tsjalling Swierstra (1960), Senior Researcher of 3TU.Ethics based in Twente University, has been appointed as Professor of Philosophy and Ethics in the Lifesciences by the Faculty of Science at the University of Amsterdam (UvA). 

His chair is supported by the Socrates Foundation. His main research topic will be how recent developments in the lifesciences challenge established humanistic thought, and how humanism might offer answers to the questions posed by the scientific and technological developments. Dr Swiestra is member of the editorial board of Krisis. Tijdschrift voor empirische filosofie (Crisis. Journal for empirical philosophy) and co-editor (with Prof. I. de Haan) of the series `Innovations in Political Theory’ of the Amsterdam University Press. Furthermore he is board member of The Netherlands Graduate School of Science, Technology and Modern Culture (WTMC) where he is coordinator of the program on Modern Culture of the Dutch Society of the Philosophy of Medicine and of the National Committee Biotechnology with Animals. The appointment is on a part-time basis. Hence, prof. Swierstra will also remain affiliated with the philosophy department of the University of Twente and will remain a member of 3TU.Ethics.
