Colloquium: The notion of product failure in the life cycle perspective

This paper deals with the notion of failure of products intended as technical artefacts.
Four partially overlapping notions of failure can be distinguished:
- material failure,
- performance failure,
- product failure,
- commercial failure.
I will argue that performance failure and product failure can be subsumed under the notion of technical failure.
I will argue that in order to properly understand technical failure the life cycle of the product has to be taken into account.
