Currently, about 10 PhD-students are working on their PhD-theses within the 3TU.Centre for Ethics and Technology Graduate School. Applying to open positions
If you wish to join this vibrant international community of researchers and work towards earning your PhD, you can apply to open positions (if available) advertised by individual researchers. The current vacancies are presented under vacancies.
Doing a PhD in the Netherlands involves being paid a full-time salary. As an indication of the gros salary per month, it ranges from EUR 2000 in the first year to EUR 2558 in the fourth year. In addition, you don’t need to pay a tuition fee, but you are expected to follow some courses (see below). Normally, the PhD program takes four years.
Applying for a self-funded PhD-position
Alternatively, if you have your own funding, you can apply for a self-funded PhD-position. The duration of a self-funded PhD normally is four years. Doing a self-funded PhD means that you have your own funds available to make a living whilst working towards your PhD since you will not be paid a salary. In addition, you would have to pay a yearly tuition fee of EUR 10,000 since part of the PhD program is doing some coursework during the first year of your PhD-track (see below).

Applicants must have a Masters degree in a subject relevant to the 3TU.Centre for Ethics and Technology programme, or are expected to have obtained their Masters degree before the starting date of their PhD track. Relevant subjects would be philosophy, ethics, or a related discipline, and demonstrable affinity with technology. A possible trajectory for students with an engineering background would be through the two-year master programme Philosophy of Science, Technology and Society at the University of Twente (http://www.utwente.nl/psts/) after which they could apply for enrolment in a 3-year PhD programme.

Coursework during the PhD program
An important part of doing a PhD is following some graduate courses. When doing a PhD at 3TU.Ethics, you will have to follow 5 courses of 5 EC-points in your first year. Courses that were offered in the previous academic year were:
o Ethics and politics of emerging technologies
o Technology and the Quality of Life
o Ethics and Engineering Design
o Environmental Ethics
o Philosophy of Risk
o Technology and Responsibility
o Philosophical Anthropology and Human-Technology Relations
These courses are under revision for the academic year 2012/2013. In addition, in July 2012, a 5-day 'Ethics 101' course will be offered by guest professor Julia Driver (Western Washington University, USA).
